Vediamo qualche esempio di attività che certi di questi software dichiarano esplicitamente di fare. A questo scopo prendiamo qualche frase particolarmente significativa dall'End User License Agreement di un prodotto adware (nel passo riportato, "Xxx" sostituisce il nome del produttore del programma ospite, mentre Web3000 è il reale nome della compagnia di advertising):

Basic Contact Information. During registration, Web3000.com and Xxxx collect "Basic Contact Information." Basic Contact Information means name, email address, gender, age group, country, operating system, browser type last used, and if purchases have been made on the net. This Basic Contact Information is stored on Web3000.com and Xxx servers.

Per la cronaca, il prodotto dalla cui licenza abbiamo estratto queste righe era un sostituto del notepad (categoria in cui si possono trovare anche molti software veramente gratuiti). Istintivamente ci verrebbe da osservare che, solo per sostituire il notepad con qualcosa di meglio, questo prodotto introduce un po ' troppe cose nel nostro sistema e segue i nostri passi in rete, come dire, un po ' troppo da vicino.
Saltano all'occhio alcune parole scelte con arte (es.:
fantastici link; per renderti tutto più facile; per scoprire i tesori della Rete...), le quali fanno passare in secondo piano il fatto che il prodotto in questione opera una vera e propria customizzazione del browser. In pratica può succedere che, volendo semplicemente un migliore notepad, qualcuno si ritrovi questa ingombrante presenza che accompagnerà sempre il suo browser, che egli usi quel notepad o no, e che gli viene tecnicamente impedito di disinstallare (occorre prima avere disinstallato il programma ospite ed ogni altro eventuale software aderente alla stessa rete di advertising).
Naturalmente ogni compagnia di advertising ha i suoi sistemi. Preso un altro prodotto, dopo aver cercato nella licenza d'uso abbiamo trovato un interessante paragrafo che riportiamo qui. Nello stralcio, "licensed software" è riferito al software di advertising, non al programma ospite; va poi osservato che tutto il testo qui riportato era scritto integralmente in maiuscole e senza andate a capo, divenendo quindi assai sgradevole e faticoso da leggere:
You expressly acknowledge and agree that demographic and personally identifiable information collected by the licensed software may be used by RADIATE, INC., and/or the manufacturer of the product, as well as shared, rented, leased, sold, or otherwise made available to third-parties at the sole discretion of RADIATE, INC., in accordance with RADIATE, INC.'s privacy policy statement.
You also acknowledge and agree that the licensed software may also generate pop-up dialogue boxes requesting you to voluntarily provide certain personally identifiable information, and requiring you to provide certain demographic information during registration of the product, and/or from time to time thereafter, while the product is active.
You further acknowledge and agree that the licensed software shall reside on your local system and may operate unobtrusively in the background, performing a live update, delivering additional requested software, collecting and transmitting information related to the display and tracking of advertising and any volunteered demographic and/or personally identifiable information about you to RADIATE, INC.'s servers whenever your web browser is active, whether the product incorporating the licensed software is active or not.
Anche qui notiamo l'arrivo di una presenza ingombrante, che si attacca al browser e che opera per i fatti suoi, magari in maniera visivamente meno evidente che nel caso precedente ma permettendosi anche più cose, come per esempio il fatto di installare ulteriori moduli software a propria discrezione. Chi si aspettasse che basti tenere spento il programma ospite per tenere disattivi i moduli di advertising viene esplicitamente disilluso nell'ultima frase. In questo accordo di licenza non si fa cenno alla sorveglianza delle abitudini di navigazione dell'utente (che, comunque, è tecnicamente possibile siano rilevate e trasmesse), mentre si dichiara esplicitamente, a differenza dell'esempio precedente, che informazioni sia demografiche che personalmente identificabili verranno utilizzate, cedute e vendute a sola discrezione della compagnia di advertising.
